SEO, AEO and GEO explained in plain English

By John ParlantiLast updated

Quick answer: SEO helps search engines like Google find your pages and show them in results. AEO (answer engine optimisation) makes your content the direct answer to a question. GEO (generative engine optimisation) helps AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity understand, trust and mention your business. They overlap heavily, and the same foundations feed all three.

You will see these three acronyms used loosely, and sometimes interchangeably. Here is what each one means in practice, how they differ, and what an owner-led business should actually do about them.

The short version

  • SEO (search engine optimisation): being found and ranked in search results.
  • AEO (answer engine optimisation): being the clear, direct answer to a question.
  • GEO (generative engine optimisation): being understood, trusted and recommended by AI tools that write their own answers.

SEO: be findable

SEO is the oldest of the three. It is the work of making your site easy for search engines to crawl, understand and trust, so your pages can appear when someone searches for what you do.

In practice that means pages that match what people really search for, a fast and secure site that works on a phone, clear service and location pages, and trust signals such as reviews and links from other credible sites. Read our plain-English guide, what is SEO, for the detail.

AEO: be the answer

More and more searches end without a click, because the answer is shown right on the results page, read out by a voice assistant, or summarised by an AI. AEO is about writing so that your content is the answer that gets picked.

That means putting the question in a heading, answering it plainly in the first sentence or two, then adding detail. Our guide to what is AEO shows how.

GEO: be recommended

Generative AI tools write answers rather than listing links. When a customer asks one of them for a recommendation, it draws on what it can find and trust about businesses like yours. GEO is the work of making sure the picture it finds is accurate, consistent and credible.

That is mostly about clear facts about who you are, what you do and where you do it, consistent details across the web, genuine reviews and mentions, and content that is specific and well sourced. Our guide to what is GEO covers it, and how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT is the practical follow-up.

How they overlap

The three are not separate projects. They are three views of the same job: make it easy for machines, and the people behind them, to understand and trust your business.

  • A clear, fast, well-structured site helps all three.
  • Specific, honest, answer-first content helps all three.
  • Accurate business details and genuine reviews help all three.

The differences are mainly in emphasis. SEO is about ranking pages, AEO is about how you phrase and structure the answer, and GEO is about being the business an AI tool names.

What to do first

  1. Get the basics right. A fast, secure, mobile-friendly site with a sitemap and a page for each main service and area.
  2. Answer real questions. Write down what customers ask you and answer each one plainly on your site.
  3. Make your details consistent. The same business name, address, phone number and descriptions everywhere, including your Google Business Profile.
  4. Collect genuine reviews. See why reviews matter for AI search.
  5. Add structured data. It labels your business details and FAQs so machines can read them reliably.
  6. Be patient. Links, reviews and trust build up over months, not days.

What nobody can promise

Search engines and AI tools are run by third parties, and they change often. Anyone who guarantees a ranking or a recommendation is guessing. What you can do is give yourself the best possible chance by doing the fundamentals well and keeping at them.

Every site we build is built to be found, with this groundwork in place from day one. If you would like to see where you stand today, an AI Visibility Audit is the best place to start.
