What is SEO? A plain-English guide for business owners

By John ParlantiLast updated

Quick answer: SEO, or search engine optimisation, is the work of making your website easy for search engines to find, understand and trust, so your pages can appear when people search for what you offer. It is not a trick. It is mostly good content, a healthy website and a reputation that search engines can see.

How search engines work, in one minute

A search engine does three things. It crawls the web, following links to discover pages. It indexes them, storing what each page is about. Then, when someone searches, it ranks the pages it thinks will answer the question best, and shows them in order.

SEO is about helping at each step: making sure your pages can be found, that it is clear what they are about, and that there is good reason to trust them.

The three parts of SEO

1. Content

Your pages need to match what people actually search for. If someone types "emergency plumber in Epsom", a page that clearly offers that, in that place, has a far better chance than a vague home page.

  • One clear page for each main service.
  • One page for each area you genuinely serve.
  • Plain, specific wording, written for people first.

2. Technical health

This is the behind-the-scenes side that lets search engines read your site without trouble.

  • Fast loading, especially on a phone.
  • Secure (HTTPS) and mobile-friendly.
  • A sitemap, clean page titles and descriptions, and structured data that labels your business details.
  • No broken pages or duplicate content.

3. Authority and trust

Search engines look for signs that other people trust you. The main ones are links from other credible sites and genuine customer reviews. Quality matters far more than quantity: one link from a respected local or industry site is worth more than hundreds of low-quality ones.

Local SEO for owner-led businesses

If you serve customers in a particular area, local SEO matters most.

  • A complete, accurate Google Business Profile.
  • Consistent business details (name, address, phone number) on trusted directories, known as citations.
  • A steady stream of genuine reviews. See why reviews matter for AI search.
  • A page for each town or area you serve, each with genuinely useful, specific content rather than copy-and-paste text.

How long does SEO take?

Usually months, not days. New pages need to be found and trusted, links and reviews build up gradually, and the results also depend on your competition and how long your domain has existed. Be wary of anyone who promises a particular position by a particular date, because rankings are controlled by search engines, not by us or anyone else.

Common mistakes

  • Buying links or using link networks. It can get a site penalised.
  • Stuffing keywords into text so it reads badly.
  • Thin location pages that only change the town name.
  • A slow, cluttered site that frustrates visitors and search engines alike.
  • Doing it once and stopping. SEO is steady work, not a one-off job, which is why our Visibility plan runs every month.

SEO is only part of the picture

People also get answers from featured snippets, voice assistants and AI tools. Those are covered by AEO and GEO, and the foundations overlap with SEO. Our guide, SEO, AEO and GEO explained, shows how they fit together.

If you would like to know where your site stands today, an AI Visibility Audit is a good first step.
